Who is winning?

You can’t assign a cost to the attacks on 9/11.

Killed were 2,819 souls, including police and firefighters and others who responded.

Injured, including those who helped clean up, are uncounted.

You can only estimate the damage.

One estimate, from International Review, is that the immediate damage was something like $105 billion and a loss of 248,000 U.S. jobs and a 1 percent slowdown in the world economy, among lots of other damage.

Likewise, you can’t assign a cost to our response.

According to costofwar.com, we are now at $1,335 billion for military action in Iraq and Afghanistan. That doesn’t include long term care for the injured, and certainly doesn’t include damage done to Iraq and Afghanistan and their peoples.

I could look up how much it has cost us in Homeland Security, buy why bother. The number would not mean anything to anyone who takes home a salary.

American troops lost in the Iraq war are now more than 4,432 souls. Another 1,455 American troops, and more now, have been lost in Afghanistan.

I have no figure on the injured.

All of this is the result of the actions of 19 suicidal religious maniacs and maybe a couple million in support funds provided by our allies, the Saudis.

Do the math.

We reacted exactly as they wanted us to. With a bonus. We invaded Iraq for no reason. Well, we actually invaded Iraq for the oil, but we didn’t get it.

So, what should we do now?

Bring back the troops. Start spending money on education, conservation, and intelligent systems. Build trains. Put people to work like the Civilian Conservation Corps. Hire more park rangers. Make things less valuable and ideas more valuable.

And remind those tribals that we live in a modern world. One more 9/11 and we nuke Mecca. Then they can put down their mats and bow to a radioactive hole in the ground. It will take about 17-20 minutes, depending on where the submarine is.

We can no longer afford to be ruled by religion. It is just ignorance.
