Mosque I explain?

with 3 comments

I am SO tired of this Ground Zero Mosque thing.

Don’t you people get it?

The people that started this and keep it going don’t give a shit whether a mosque, which is really a community center, is built two blocks from the site of the World Trade Center or 2,000 miles from the site.

There is one thing they care about. It is obfuscation.

They want people in Kansas to spend their Baptist attention opposing Muslims in New York over something they will never even see.

Most of the people who oppose the community center don’t have one of their own.

The result is mutual mistrust and, most important, making everyone from dishwashers and taxi drivers to TV network and Washington pundits concentrate on a complete non-issue at the expense of the things we really should be talking about.

If you ever thought that some people in New York shouldn’t build a community center two streets over from Ground Zero, you should have taken it up with the zoning board.

I watch relatively interesting TV – Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. I have watched literally hours of television about this non-issue and they don’t get it.

The point is not the Christian idiots in Kansas don’t get the concept of freedom of religion or how important it is to our culture.

The point is that they can be worked up to a Christian Jihad about a “mosque” in New York when they really should be wondering why their representatives don’t give them health care.

It is not about religious intolerance. That is a given.

It is about the use of religious intolerance as a political weapon.

And it really works.

We haven’t talked much about the Bush tax cuts for the rich in weeks. We haven’t explained why they are so counter-productive for the economy or so completely unfair.

The more we talk about the “mosque,” the less we talk about taxes and who should pay them and what they should be used for.

That is what they, the rich and the Republicans, want.

Get pissed about the Ground-Zero Mosque at your own risk.

  3. From Thomas Jefferson writing about his freedom of religion proposal for Virginia, which would be the basis for our First Amendment:

“I had drawn in all the latitude of reason and right. It still met with opposition; but with some mutilations in the preamble, it was finally passed; and a singular proposition proved that it’s protection of opinion was meant to be universal. Where the preamble declares that coercion is a departure from the plan of the holy author of our religion, an amendment was proposed, by inserting the word “Jesus Christ,” so that it should read “a departure from the plan of Jesus Christ, the holy author of our religion.” The insertion was rejected by a great majority, in proof that they meant to comprehend, within the mantle of it’s protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Mahometan (Muslim), the Hindoo, and infidel of every denomination.” (Autobiography, 1821. ME 1:67)
