Looking for Hot Air in Palm Beach

The temperature has been a bit on the cool side for the last couple of days. I’ve had to wear sweats instead of bicycle pants and a tee shirt as I ride up and down Palm Beach. So today I went in search of some warmer air – hot air to be exact.

Two days ago, Obama chief-of-staff Rahm Emanuel proclaimed Palm Beach’s own Rush Limbaugh “the voice and the intellectual force and energy behind the Republican Party.” This surprised Michael Steele, who actually is the Republican Party Chairman. Steele joked that he, rather than Limbaugh, is “the de facto leader of the Republican Party.”

Here is where the hot air starts blowing. On yesterday’s radio show, Limbaugh said Steele is not fit to lead the Republican Party. Steele telephoned Limbaugh and apologized. Limbaugh “is a national conservative leader and in no way do I want to diminish his voice,” Steele said later.

Well, that voice, listened to by 14 million Americans, said not long ago that it wants President Obama to fail and the economic stimulus package to fail. I guess that puts Rush in favor of a new 1930’s style depression and that, I think, is pretty hot air.

So I rode my trusty recumbent a couple blocks out of the way to 1495 N. Ocean Blvd., the home of America’s favorite talk show host. That’s a photo of the front gate above.

And I was disappointed. Not only can you not see the Rush mansion, but there wasn’t even a warm breeze coming through the gate. I guess Rush has good weather stripping in his $40 million oceanfront compound.

But these are the days of digital miracles. Google Earth to the rescue. Below is a bird’s eye view of what is behind those tall hedges.

And here is the tax info on Rush’s digs courtesy of the Palm Beach County Tax Assessor.

Rush obviously can afford to weather a new economic depression. It is reported he just signed a new contract worth $400 million. Not bad for a college dropout from Cape Girardeau, Missouri. I just wonder how many of his listeners can.

  1. I’ve been by Rush’s home, thinking that if I ran into him, my Dittohead Dad, Brother and Uncle would worship me. No luck. There’s a delivery entrance gate on the north side, but all you can see are a couple of employees’ cars. That’s not unusual on Palm Beach.

On Rush’s statement that he wants Obama to fail: When I heard his sound bite, I read that show’s transcript. He does NOT want the Recession to continue, but he (and other conservatives) are deathly afraid of our govt. taking over banks and other private industries, so he doesn’t like Obama’s solution. Of course, he also didn’t offer his version of a better fix.

  2. He wants it to fail. No fix. What can I think other than he wants a big, bad recession?

Even Rush can’t have it both ways.

If pressed, Rush will say more tax cuts. We already know where that got us.

If tax cuts don’t work, and doing nothing won’t work, there is only one other place to go.

    Tax Rush.

I think he can afford it.
